Quorum Question in Skype / Windows Fabric

Hi!
So, a bit of a basic question!

OK - so i'm aware that to start a pool initially you need 85% of FE online to achieve Quorum then going forward to maintain 50%

My question is why?

When the pool starts, to split your Routing Groups to 1 Primary and 2 Backups you need 3 servers, so if you have a 7 pool cluster why do you need 5 servers? As long as you have 3 you should be ok right?

Same goes for the Pool level Quorum – I would have thought as long as 3 servers remain we’d be ok…

I’ve seen a lot of websites that detail the number of servers required for quorum but none that say why?

Hi AsiaMSD,

Yes, you need 85% of FE online to achieve Quorum, because if fewer servers are running, the services might be stuck in the starting state and the pool might not start, so if you have 7 servers in the pool, you need at least 5 servers running for the pool, it is by design.
