Sharepoint Database Migration RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We are using SQL Server 2005 as the backend for one of the instances of our Sharepoint 2007 installations. Since SQL Server 2005 is out of support, We are thinking about upgrading / migrating to SQL Server 2008/2012/2014.

So, the question basically is, is SharePoint 2007 supported on SQL Server 2008/2012/2014 Database, assuming that We leave the Compatibility Levels to 2008. Are there any known issues / risks of doing that? Does MS recommend a particular approach?

Please share your thoughts and suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Bala Peri

  • Hi,

As far as I know, SharePoint 2007 does support SQL server 2008 R2 and later versions as long as SP2 is installed for SharePoint 2007

This also covers the specifics and official guidance from Microsoft.

    • SharePoint 2007 with SP1 = SQL Server 2008
    • SharePoint 2007 with SP2 = SQL Server 2008 R2
    • No support for SQL Server 2012

All at the bottom of the page.

  • Please check this SharePoint SQL Server Support Matrix. In addition, based on the equation to determine compatibility in that document, SharePoint 2007 would not be supported on SQL 2014.

For migration you need to perform the following steps before this ensure to take backups of the databases, system state backup and then try the solution listed below:-

    - Stop the farm and Detach the databases.
    - Shut down the old database server.
    - Then prepare the new database server that has the same name as the old one.
    - Reattach the databases on the new server.
    - After that restart the server that is running Central Administration to apply the changes and ensure that the services, Web sites, and application pools that are associated with Office SharePoint Server 2007 are started.

For more details steps refer to this link.
