USB not working in Windows 7

Question
-
I have had problems with USB devices working in Windows 7 where devices worked at first, but then not working. Until now at least my Epson Stylus Photo R280 printer has usually worked. (When it didn't, rebooting the computer and turning printer OFF and back ON has worked. Now I can't get printer to work.
I've tried uninstalling ths USB items in the past with limited success. BUT, the solution instructions say to disconnect all USB devices--but they don't say whether to reconnect them before rebooting computer. Does this matter?

Could be your USB stack has been trashed.
You may need to remove all the USB components in the device manager and reboot and let Windows rebuild it.
If that fails then backup and install Windows clean.

Removing the drivers is all you need to do, leaving the gear connected will be recognized on the reboot.

Thanks for the suggestion--I'll try it. What I would like to know is whether all USB devices need to be unplugged from the computer at the point it is rebooted to rebuild the USB configuration.
I also noticed an update posted about a year ago (KB976972) which may help with the problem. Does that maake sense?

The KB 976972 is the issue occurred when copy data to an external USB storage device.
It seems not similar with your situation.
You can try Vegan Fanatic’s method to refresh the USB stack to check if it works.

Thank you. This seems to have worked. The problem has plagued me for months, so I can't tell you how much it has helped.

Thanks again for this added suggestion. I have read similar answers to the one by "Vegan," but they never answered the question about whether to leave USB devices connected when I reboot (after uninstalling in Device Manager.)
