Replica is inconsistent RRS feed

  • Question

  • I use DPM 2010 to take backup of my VM on hyper v.

For some VM (member) it says Replica is inconsistent.

I tried to remove and recreate protection but its still the same. Any one have idea about this.

  • Run a Consistency Check (CC) against the VM that is showing Replica is inconsistent.

Once it fails, post here the CC job result (DPM Console/Monitoring/Jobs tab).

  • HI Wilson,

Thx for the reply. I m getting following failed job description.

DPM encountered a retryable VSS error. (ID 30112 Details: VssError: The writer experienced a transit error. If the backup process is retired the error may not reoccur (0x800423f3))

I have tried it twice getting same error.

  • If you log into the VM itself,

Do you see any error in Application/System log at the time you were trying to do the backup?

Is the latest VMAditions installed on those VMs?

  • Hi,

Is the agent running on the Hyper-V host or on the VM? If it is on the Hyper-V host and you don't use a hardware provider for back-ups you have to serialize the back-ups for the VM's. Please check this page:

If you do not have the back-up serialized and you start a couple of VM back-ups at the same time the result will be the inconsistency.
    hope this helps,

  • KB article 2462424 - "A System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 initiated Hyper-V backup using a child partition for a guest fails with error 30112" at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2462424 provides more details about this error.  This error can occur if you have a VSS hardware provider installed that does NOT support auto-recovery [VSS_VOLSNAP_ATTR_AUTORECOVERY].  You must make sure the hardware VSS provider you are using is listed in the content titled “Appendix F: Tested hardware VSS providers” at  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh146886.aspx
