Windows Server 2003 migration to Windows Server 2012 R2 WSUS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have followed these steps with a few changes:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh852349.aspx

MSSSQL Server 2014 as a DB on the new server.

I have a separate drive (H:) for all WSUS data.

I ran the post install steps pointing to the source location and DB as well as wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow, and then wuauclt.exe /reportnow.

It appears computer are "checking in" but no updates are being delivered.  Everything on the Server itself tells me its functioning ok.

Any thoughts or diagnostic checks I can run?

  • Ok, so there's some really important lines missing from the snippet you've provided (the service startup and selfupdate lines, because they tell us critical info about the configuration and version).

Anyway, the log you provided, shows us that a detection (do I need any updates) has been performed, and, some updates are being scheduled for download, and, download is being attempted, but failed with 0x80244019, which is basically the same as HTTP404 (page not found), this generally means that WSUS is misconfigured, because WSUS has told WUAgent "get this file from this address" but when WUAgent tries that, WSUS/IIS replies "I don't have that file".

This can mean that the webservices (IIS) might be misconfigured. Does this server have any other function/purpose? Were there any issues during setup/configuration of WSUS or the server itself? Are there errors recorded in Windows event logs?

  • Hi,

As Don has mentioned above, the client failed to download the updates with error HTTP 404.

Please check if the following URI exists on the WSUS server:

    http://gccsus/Content/CD/7A72AD5641EC26C94BFC535739B4603C40A41CCD.cab

    >>Server URL = http://gccsus/ClientWebService/client.asmx

WSUS changes the default port since Windows Server 2012(WSUS v6.2). TCP port 8530 is used for HTTP and TCP port 8531 is used for HTTPS. If you didn't change the port manually, we should append the port number after the URL of the server.

Here is the screenshot of my lab:

    Best Regards.

  • Hi,

    >>Is there a way to "sync" these things?

Please run the wsusutil reset on WSUS server. This command will let wsus server check the content file. If any file is missing, it will re-download it.

    Best Regards.

  • On the WSUS server, have you performed synchronisation?
What was the result? (success or error)
Have you selected/configured Classifications + Products?

At a client, examine the windowsupdate.log (unless it's Win10, in which case, examine Event Logs).

WindowsUpdate.log will confirm the client is configured for your WSUS and able to communicate and scan for updates, and, process the Approvals you have performed, and, perform Download of updates and installation of updates, and then report results back to WSUS.

  • Syncs have been successful and are completing twice per day.  Classification / Products were carried over from the old WSUS server and are selected.  Computer groups were carried over as well.

As for WindowsUpdate.log, here is a snippett:

  • I actually reverted the port on the WSUS server back to port 80 from 8530 after the install.  Was this a bad idea?  I did this as our GPO was set to port 80 from the 2003 WSUS server install.

As for this file, it does not exist:

    http://gccsus/Content/CD/7A72AD5641EC26C94BFC535739B4603C40A41CCD.cab

Is there a way to "sync" these things?

Are there issues with using MSSQL as the DB?

  • Hi,

    >>Is there a way to "sync" these things?

Please run the wsusutil reset on WSUS server. This command will let wsus server check the content file. If any file is missing, it will re-download it.

    Best Regards.
