DPM 2010\WIndows 2008 : Way to shrink Replica volume? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I can shrink recovery point volume in DPM 2010 GUI, but don't see the option for the replica volumes. I've overallocated replica volumes and would like to re-claim the space. Any info will be appreciated!

  • Hi,

We don't support or recommend shrinking the replica volume because that "could" lead to lost recovery points especially if the recovery point volume is close to being full.  With that said, shrink is a feature of the operating system and DPM does not prevent you from shrinking the replica volumes.  You can do that in Disk Management or using diskpart.exe shrink command.

You can get the replica path link under the data source properties, and match up the mountpoint path to the one listed in diskpart "list volume" command.  Select the volume, the shrink it.

  • Can't I just look for replica volumes in the Disk management gui and shrink the volume that way?

  • Hi,

I found a program that provides  a windows shell for DiskPart, this simplifies the managment of Replica Volumes, something that is missing in the current DPM version. This helps me to manage the 400 volumes on my DPM server and limits the storage waist.
