Word saving blank documents

Question
-
This problem has caused me countless extra hours of work.
I open a blank document, create text content, and Save the file as .docx. I close the document. Upon reopening the document it is completely blank and the file size is 0kb. Unfortunately I saved about five files before I realized what was happening. They are all completely gone as far as I can tell and not saved as backups anywhere.
Does anyone have any solutions to this problem? If not: Is Word corrupt? Do I need to install a new copy to avoid this problem in the future? It is obviously unusable when it works like this.

This behavior sounds like you might be working from a Flash drive? If you don't eject flash drives properly, files don't get written.
