BizTalk SQL Server Failover Cluster Licensing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've poured over the pricing-licensing faq a number of times (http://www.microsoft.com/biztalk/en/us/pricing-licensing-faq.aspx) but am not certain about one aspect of BizTalk licensing requirements.  In a "Basic Scale-out for High Availability" scenario, where the SQL Server (which in this case is clustered) is separated from the BizTalk Server does the SQL Server require any BizTalk Server licenses?

My impression from the question regarding scale-out versus failover is that the database servers are considered seperate from the BizTalk server, but it doesn't expressly say these don't require BizTalk Server licensing.

  • Hi,

You do need BizTalk license for SQL servers (clustered or non-clustered) if BizTalk is installed on separate server(s).  We are running similar configuration where we have active/passive SQL server cluster and four BizTalk application servers.  We are paying BizTalk license for our four BizTalk application servers.
