Explorer crashes multiple times a day.

    Question

  • I am running Windows 10 Pro and have noticed that explorer would start crashing randomly, especially if I am copy/pasting text.

The tell-all is that the screens would flicker, and my open windows would resize to their default sizes.

The event viewer logs are very general in terms of specific faulting components and I have been having issues pin-pointing the problem. A research on the failing TwinUI.dll has led me to believe that it has to do with my dual screen setup, however I have not found a way to alleviate the issue.

Things I've tried - Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade, clean Win 10 install, swapping the Radeon GPU for Nvidia (currenly using Quadro K620), changing drivers..

It is very annoying and I would really appreciate any pointers to fix it.

    Thank you.

Every time the screens flicker, several entries are added to the event viewer:

    1) Error Entry with Event ID 1000

  • We could enable writing of dump files as descibed in this thread:
File Explorer crashing for a group of users
then you can upload the dump file for us to inspect.

  • Hi ,

Did the issue occur with all the machines or the specific one?
If it only occur on one machine, then what is your machine model?
Please check if this issue occur on safe mode. If this issue is gone in safe mode, then there is a possibility it is caused by incompatible drivers.  Please check whether your device manufacturer website has released the Windows 10 compatible driver for your machine model. Windows may not work well as expected if there is no compatible drivers.

    Best regards

  • Hello,

Please find a link to three explorer crash dumps from this morning below. Happened few minutes apart and - weirly enough - what seems to trigger it is heavy copying (ctrl+c).

  • all three were a  Access violation with no 3rd party dll on the call stack.
    These dll's seem rather old:

      Image path: C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mdnsNSP.dll

if you have really have ITunes from 2010 installed: uninstalled it quickly, as it was full of security holes.

  • No iTunes and a less than a month old fresh install. Did have bonjour, which I guess something else reuiqred but uninstalled it anyway. The DigitalPersona software is a legacy software that runs the access control biometrics, and they do not have updates for this type of fp reader, so there is no really a way around it.
