Switch and using a secondary DPM 2010 ??? RRS feed

  • Question

  •  I have one cluster exchange server 2010 with DAG include 2 nodes (2 servers): Mail1 vs Mail2.

Now, I protect this DAG by one primary DPM 2010 (Protect DAG include 2 servers mail).

And, how can I protect the primary DPM 2010 by a secondary DPM 2010 with condition: If the primary is down, the secondary DPM will become to primary and continues to protect DAG with all data of primary DPM.

     Thanks !!!

  • Hi,

that's why you should apply the QFE for DPM.It enables the secondary protection for DAGs : http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=23224

This hotfix rollup resolves the following issues:

Blocks a backup of an Exchange DAG to a secondary DPM 2010 server.

You are prompted to restart a client computer after you install an agent on the client.

DPM services crash and you receive the error: Unable to connect to the database because of a fatal database error.

MSDPM crashes with event ID 945 in the event log.

When you change a Protection Group, add a very large database, change the disk allocation and then commit the Protection Group, DPM 2010 does not honor the user intent and set the sizes of replica and shadow copy volumes to the default sizes.

  • Hi GdRoser,

If your primary DPM servern fails your secondary DPM server can continue to protect your DAG enviroment. The switch between making a secondary DPM server primary isn't automatic since you have perhaps different SLA's on protected memebers.

The process of switching between a primary and a secondary is very easy. Right click (in your case) a mailboxa database and choose switch protection. Done.

Did you get a fully awnser to your question?

  • Hi,

    Robert said it all.
Just add the following fix for the secondary protection and you are ready to go : http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=23224

  • Thanks Robert and Jeremy but it's impossible...

Because when I do it to switch, one warning appeared: "Switch protection is not supported for protected computers which are part of DAG".

I think if it's file server, SQL server, maybe okie, but nodes of DAGs, DPM doesn't support !!!

    Any ideals ???

  •  Thanks Jeremy...

But I installed QFE before. The secondary DPM can backup DAGs, but can't switch to primary. The same warning appeared.
