Is it possible to uninstall IE 11 from Windows Server 2012 R2 and replace it with the latest version of IE 10? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to uninstall IE 11 from Windows Server 2012 R2 and replace it with the latest version of IE 10? We have a remote desktop farm setup with 2012 R2 servers and we are publishing some web links that only work with IE10. As a result, we need to downgrade the remote desktop servers to IE10. I have a feeling that this isn't possible, but if I could get a definitive answer, I would greatly appreciate it, thank you!

  • <EDIT>
No, IE11 is part & parcel of Windows Server 2012 R2 Service Pack 1 and cannot be downgraded.

    Restoring Windows Server 2012 R2 (i.e., without SP1) would restore IE10.

  • Robear - Thank you for your response!

Unfortunately, IE doesn't to be an option that can be removed from 2012 R2 using the suggestion that you provided. Also, compatibility view for IE11 appears to be greyed out with no option to add any websites.

Not if WS2012.2 is the server analog of  W8.1.  In that case IE11 would be the OS base browser functionality.  You would need to uninstall the service pack to get back to whatever level of browser functionality that you had before that.

  • Which would be 10?

I think 11 is what ships with Server 2012 R2 right out the box. But can that be removed and then replaced with IE10?

    It is not possible.

WS2012R2 is the server equivalent of Win8.1, IE11 is baked-in to the OS.

  • Hi,

    Agreed with DonPick.

Internet Explorer 11 is preinstalled with Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
