Trouble renaming files/folders in Windows 7

Question
-
We have a client who is experiencing the following problem. We have witnessed it ourselves but have yet to find a solution. It is happening to more than one user at the same location. The files in question are stored on a network share from a Windows 2012 R2 server. Any ideas? Thanks
When I am renaming a file in Windows Explorer and use the mouse to select a part of the current file name, Windows frequently will force a selection of the entire current file name rather than the part of the name I am trying to select.
When this occurs, I have to deselect the entire filename and try to select the segment of the filename I am trying to copy once again. Worse yet - it is not a consistent behavior, but when it does occur it typically takes 3 attempts before it will actually let you select the segment you are after without selecting the rest of the name on you once again.
Even worse still, is that a similar behavior emerges when trying to select a part of a file that you want to either delete, or replace with text that is currently in the clipboard. You select the segment you mean to replace, and (6 times out of 10 I'd average) the entire filename selects itself at the very instant you hit delete (or paste). This deletes the entire filename, rather than the portion you intended (or replaces it with your clipboard content, depending on if you hit delete or CTRL-V).

Hi dgally,
"The problem has just started to surface over the last few days"
So the issue only occurred with the specific machine when we tried to modify the shared files and we can modify the shared files from other machine correctly ,right ?Have you tried to run the fixit tool from problematic machine ?Have you made any modifications to the machine before ?
Considering it occurred recently,we can perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous normal point .Best regards

Hi dgally ,
When did the issue start to occur?
" It is happening to more than one user at the same location. The files in question are stored on a network share from a Windows 2012 R2 server."
Do you mean this issue only occurs when we try to operate the shared files from the specific Windows 7 machine or it occurred with the specific shared folder and it occurred with all the machines?
This will help us to narrow down that this issue is caused by the specific machine or the specific files. If it is the former ,will the issue persist when we operate the local files?
We can run the following fixit tool to have a diagnostic.
Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/en-hk
Considering this behavior is a little weird, I recommend you to perform a full scan with the antivirus software.
If it is the latter ,we can try to create a new shared folder to replace the old one to have a check.Best regards

Thank you for your reply.
The problem has just started to surface over the last few days. The problem does seem to only happen on files from the network shares. It is happening to all users. If the file is stored locally on the computer there is no issue. As suggested I have begun a full AV scan on both the server and local computers. I am awaiting the results. Is it possible to be a permissions issue on the shared files? Most users have "modify" rights which should be enough to allow renaming and moving of the file.
Any other suggestions?
