A bunch of weird bugs? Fill cell changes font. Show all subtasks show changes in cells. Filter shows deselected tasks RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm having some difficulties with a couple of weird UI / Font related changes. Have anyone else experienced this or have a solution?

    I'm using:

    Microsoft Project Professional 2010

    v. 14.0.7106.5003 (32 bit version)

    1. When I try to fill a row with a color - MSP2010 changes the font and fontsize:

This is just one example, when changing fonts I have issues all the time. For example MSP sometimes adds new activities with the same font as all other activities (Arial 8pt) and other times decides that it shoud use (Calibri 11pt).

    2. When I expand all subtasks in outline MSP says that values of custom cells have changed:

(look at column called "Verkligt arbete.") Custum formula is: [Tal1]*[Tal2]/100

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/jive7nrqbmmqcia/custom%20column%20change.avi

    3. Filter does not filter out summary activities

I do reccomend that you download the video files since Dropbox renders them at lower quality when watched on their homepage.

To be completely honest, I'm trusting Microsoft Project 2010 less and less each day I use it. If the basic stuff does not work, how can I trust that the more advanced things does work?

  • PrGus,

I don't see any indication in your version number that you have SP2 installed. I also recommend you install the June 2013 CU. All updates can be downloaed at: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/ee748587.

Install the updates and then if you still have problems we'll help you do some troubleshooting.

  • Hi,

Zillions of users dn't have this sort of problem so let's see where are the misunderstandings.

For your first point, one would check Text Styles. It is possible that critical or marked tasks do not have the same font/color attached. Impossible to check on the dropbox only.

Some calculations only happen on expanded tasks.

"Filter does not filter out summary activities". Indeed, that's how auto filter works.

If you click Filter in the View ribbon, then More Filters, New, you can define a filter with the option to show the summary tasks or not.

To completely check where Project's behaviour does not match your expectations, I need to see the file. You can send it if you want to

    jandemesATprom-ade.be (replace AT by @)

Finally - a bug is when function does not meet the documentation: when function does not meet user expectation that may be a misunderstanding.

  • Hi,

CU stands for Cumulative Update, so you only need to install the latest on.

  • First off, thanks for your input. Since I was unsure if these are built in but unintuitive features or actual bugs (or something else) i used the questionmark at the end in the title.

    1.

For your first point, one would check Text Styles. It is possible that critical or marked tasks do not have the same font/color attached. Impossible to check on the dropbox only.

Checked text styles. All show Arial 8, some bold but nothing else. What happens is that the fontsize changes from 8 to 10 (so correction: not calibri in this case). In other instances the font, text color or bold style changes - but i do not have a video of this behaviour. This has happened in several different files so it is not exclusive for this file.

    What can I check next?

    2.

Some calculations only happen on expanded tasks.

Could you please elaborate which? And also, which of the alternatives under "calculation for task and group summary rows" are affected by this?

    3.

"Filter does not filter out summary activities". Indeed, that's how auto filter works.

After some experimenting after the post I came to the same conclution. A bit counterintuitive i think but something I can accept.

  • Thankyou for pointing this out. I'm shocked that the MS Support technician (which i paid over 300euros for) did not notice that I lacked this install...

Somehow the updates for MS Office and MS project was excluded from my windows update. Fixed this but I am unsure about the CU...

I've found a december CU: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2911591 should i download this instead? or was there a specific reason for the june 2013 CU?

Do I have to choose each specific package under the CU and install them one by one or is there a file which combines all of them?

  • PrGus,

Yes updates are cumulative but the reason I don't normally recommend users install the latest update is that cumulative updates do not receive the same level of thorough testing that service packs receive. The following "disclaimer" is attached to each cumulative update:

"However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update (i.e. service pack) thta contain this hotfix".

The June 2013 cumulative update was released after SP2 and contains a significant number of fixes. Cumulative updates since then have had very limited functional changes. That's why I recommend the June 2013 cumulative update but do not normally recommend the latest cumulative update.

All updates can be downloaded from: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/ee748587
