Update Error after clean installation (Vista X64 HP) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Prologue:

I made a clean Installation of Vista X64 Home Premium on a Asus P5B Deluxe Board. The only things i installed, are the last Intel Chipset Driver for the P965 Chipset (X64), the latest Creative Driver (X64) and the lastest NVIDIA Driver for X64. After that i established my internet connection and tried to update Windows Vista.

He found about 42 important  Updates, which i tried to install but after the progress there where 6 failed Updates (4 Security and 2 Performance and Reliabiity Updates) with various error messages. In the following hours i reinstalled Vista multiple times, tried to reinstall the missing updates, tried to download and install them and in the end i had one Important Reliabilty Update missing which failed sometimes with 80070002, sometimes with 80070057 and various other errors. Somethings he doesnt even complete the search for missing updates.

Among other things i have tried the workarounds with deleting the "SoftwareDestribution" Folder, deleting the Pending-File in WinSXS, deleting various Registry-Entries exhaustively. Just like it is explained in many forums.

    Questions:

I know i lack the informationen of which updates did exactly fail and also most of the error messages i encountered, but i have more general questions:

    1) Did anyone experience similar problems with fresh Vista X64 Installations and if so, how did you solve them?

    2) Is there some kind of general hotfix concerning the Update Service/BITS, that is worth a shot?

    3) Since some of the error codes refer to BITS or maybe the BITS Cache, can anyone tell me the locations of this cache? I think all of the Files i deleted only concern the Update Services itself. And it seems that the BITS Location is not the same as in XP.

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi,

Could you provide the specific update name which cannot be installed? For these updates, I'd like to suggest you manually donwload from Microsoft website and intall them.

Also, for clearing the queued jobs from the BITS transfer quese, try this KB:

920649    You cannot download new updates from a server that is running Windows Server Update Services

    Thanks for your reply!

One update i have definitely a problem with, ist 942615, the cumulative update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista X64 Edition. Yesterday i reinstalled the system and the first thing i did was Installing this update. I already downloaded the file from the MS Download Site but it didnt work either.

It doesnt matter if i install it over the Update Program or directly from the downloaded file, in both cases it´s the 80070057 error. And of course i didnt mention the bunch of other error-messages i receive, when i forget to clear the SoftwareDistribution - Folder.

And about the Bits-Cache, i will try out the KB-Article.

  • After clearing the Bits-Cache i have successfully installed 942615. After that i continued with the rest of the updates. Long story short i now have two missing updates 935807 and 938979.

935807 is failing with 80070002 and 938979 with 80070057. And this time it makes no difference if i clear "SoftwareDistribution", BITS-Cache and/or start the Update directly from the file, downloaded from download.microsoft.com.

The funny thing is, 935807 has already been re-released to fix exactly this 80070002 error, iam experiencing. But it looks like its still not enough. Iam already using the V2 Version as you can see from this windowsupdates excerpt.
