desktop shortcuts disappearing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm starting a fresh thread due to the situation becoming critical here.

We had no problems with disappearing icons from the desktop till earlier this month. Which points to an update from MSFT enforcing the stupid, idiotic, moronic process of deleting shortcuts from users desktop whenever it feels fit.

So, how do I turn off this bug of desktop cleanups? I don't want to have to go to each machine and turn off the maintenance task. Is there something I can do from the AD controller.

  • Hi ,

Please share more details for better analyzation:
    1. Does the issue resolved after turning off the maintenance task?
    2. Which update do you mean?

If you want to disable the maintenance task by group policy, we could take the following steps:
    1. Go through path computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Troubleshooting and Diagnostics\Scheduled maintenance\Configure Scheduled maintenance Behavior
    2. Disable the policy and we will turn off the maintenance task.

For more information, please refer to the following thread.

  • Hello,

Can you have look at this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978980 ? This might help you to solve your problem.

Also you told "Which points to an update from MSFT enforcing the stupid, idiotic, moronic process of deleting shortcuts from users desktop whenever it feels fit."

It is not true, you cannot simply blame them, this happens due to the settings you changed in your Windows. Or most probably your Anti-virus is doing this.

1 I don't want to shut off the whole maintenance process, just the part dealing with the desktop settings and icons

2: it is very much true, our users are far from the only ones affected by this bug. The desktop shortcuts are not 'broken' , nor have they not been used for more than two weeks. No settings were changed on the pc's nor on the AD controller UNLESS one of MSFT patches/updates this month did so. The same AV is not on all the pc's.

  • Can anyone here report if the Hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2642357 fixed the issue without causing other grief?

  • They were different type of shortcuts. Some to folders, some to batch files, some to files both local and LAN
