Database size after moving the mailbox RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I move user mailbox from one database A to  database B then Database A size doesn’t go down.  Will it go down after 30 days(retention period) or do I have to do something? Exchange 2010 does online defrag so I don’t have to do offline defrag to recover space right?

    Thanks

  • Hi

Online defrag will not reduce the size of the EDB file, the only way to do this is an offline eseutil /d.  After the retention period an amount of "white space" will be made available in the EDB file for new data to be written to.

    Cheers, Steve

  • If you are trying to reduce the edb file, then either create a new DB, move mailboxes to it and then delete the old DB.

If you are just referring to the mailbox, then moving the mailbox wont change anything, it's the contents in the mailbox which are beng removed and they will stay the same, unless there are some corrupted items.

  • In Exchange 2010,I recommend you to move all the mailboxes in the database to other database and recreate the database file to claim the space. One of the advantage of moving mailboxes when compared to other version of exchange. In exchange 2010,it is build on dumpster 2.0.The speciality of dumpster 2.0 it will move the recovery deleted items also while moving the mailboxes. But in exchange 2003 and exchange 2007 is build on dumpster 1.0 where recovery deleted items are lost when moving the mailbox.

In a DAG environment, doing offline defrag is not good idea.Because we need reseed the database again to passive copy. The best is to move the mailbox to other database. While moving the mailbox enable circular logging.

  • Hi Rohit,

    Couple of things.

What is the service pack and rollup are you running on .If you running on exchange service pack 1 and rollup 6 or lesser advice you to install the following patch.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2621266.

(Note: This is included in the Service Pack 2. )

After the installaion of the patch or service pack it generally takes 4 to 5 weeeks for the Application to start Reclaiming the whitespace.
