IE Not querying for wpad RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

    I've got a Windows 7 client running IE 9.

I'm trying to get the "Automatically detect settings" tick box to work. However, I cannot see IE making any request, be it DHCP or DNS. I've sniffed the packets using WireShare and I see the DNS request to resolve the URL but nothing for wpad.

    Can anyone help?

    regards

  • Hi,

I figured this out by using Wireshark.

What I found was the initial broadcast response from the DHCP server does not contain option 252, but the client then makes a subsequent request which asks for option 252. This is then returned and can be viewed using wireshare

To trace this I did the following

    1. Configure IE with only "Automatically Detect Settings" ticked

    2. Release the IP address

    3. Start the trace on WireShark

    4. Renew the IP address

    5. Wait a few seconds

    6. Stop the trace on WireShark

    7. Look for DHCP related requests

    Hopefully this helps
