Do virus, malware in Mailboxes affect Exchange server ?

    Question

  • In Exchange Mailbox Server and PC client in my organization, we installed Trend Micro Office Scan Client.

When someone send email to internal with virus in attachment, if user save attachment to computer, Office Scan will remove it.

But in Exchange Mailbox Server, Office Scan does not have any notifications. I think that, virus have existed in database mailbox now. Does anyone know why it is happening?

    Thanks a lot!

  • Hi,

    Thanks for contacting our forum.

Not sure if Trend Micro Office Scan Client just a client side software, if it is, it just remove the attachments with virus on the client side. It won’t affect the server size. And the message with attachment have been stored in the DBs.

If we want to remove the attachments with virus on the server level, we need to deploy the malware software and antivirus software on the Exchange server and delete the attachment before the message stored in the DB.

    Hope it helps.

  • As Jason mention, if you have AV on the workstation with the latest definition then it the virus should be removed but if you receive an email that has a virus from external then you will need Exchange AV aware and scan the emails before it deliver to the mailbox.
