Windows Updates - will not run according to schedule RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Microsoft Updates do not run according to the schedule when scheduled by Windows SteadyState.  The PC goes through the motions of the updates, but when you check in event viewer, you can see that it errors:-

Automatic updates failed while trying to run Microsoft Updates

Please see extract from Windowsupdate.log which refers to AU and interactive-only mode which I believe is referring to WSUS and there's also reference to a FATAL problem with WUAutoUpdateAtAShutdown failed.  As well as updating Microsoft Update we also update our antivirus as part of this process.  It seems that the antivirus program is updating properly and therefore there seems to only be an issue with Microsoft Updates.  Please note that the updates run successfully if you run them manually and also if you run the WindowsUpdates.vbs script which SteadyState uses.

I'd be grateful if you could please provide any hints or tips on how this process works with SteadyState, so that I can begin to troubleshoot.

    Thanks

    Vixstar

  • Automatic updates failed while trying to run Microsoft Updates

Hi Vixstar, based on the error message, it seems this should be a Windows Update related issue. The error message shows that the update may occur on time, however, it fails.  You can also temporarily disable/uninstall Windows SteadyState and check if update runs properly. If this occurs with/without SteadyState installed, I suggest you submit a support incident via Windows Update/Microsoft Update support group:

    Hope this helps!

  • Vixstar - did you ever find an answer to this issue? I seem to be having the same problem (exactly) and it keeps coming back to SteadyState as the culprit.

  • I fixed my problem - here is what I found for anyone interested.

We have an OU in Active Directory that sets when, and from what server, to apply Windows Updates. I had installed Windows Steady State and enabled the updater BEFORE I put this computer in the OU. I completely rebuilt it and installed Steady State AFTER I put it in the OU and now it works.

Something I noticed visually - if you open Automatic Updates - on the machine that didn't work "Automatic (Recommended)" was still enabled, on the machine that worked "Turn off automatic updates" was enabled.
