Question related to Windows updates download RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Team,

We have the current WSUS policy as "Auto download and notify for install" for our environment. And we have one WSUS server (no upstream or downstream) which manages all the clients.

My question is when I am clicking on the "Install update" button, what exactly happens at this point?

    1. The Client reaches the WSUS server and starts downloading the updates at that point of time and installs them OR

    2. The updates were already downloaded to the local cache of the Client and the client only installs them.

    Thanks in advance,

  • Hi Curios_Techie,

the second scenario will occur. The updates are already downloaded at that point, you can check in the c:\windows\windowsUpdate.log file to see or directly under c:\windows\softwaredistribution\downloads

  • Hi,

    Option 2.

The Windows update agent on the clients will check and download updated based on the time set on the "Automatic Updates Frequency" GPO, the default being every 22 hours.

The updates will then be downloaded in the background via the BITS service which if required can be tweaked via group policy to restrict bandwidth or the download times.

When someone presses the button to start the installation of updates the updates which have fully downloaded will be installed.

    Thanks

    Phil
