Lag spikes while playing games

Question
-
Hi there!
Firstly, I would like to say that I really enjoy Windows 7 and would hate to go back to Vista because of this problem.
When I play DotA (Which is a mod to Warcraft III) with people (I often host the game because of my fast internet connection) they are all experiencing lag spikes. They come and go every 5-7 minutes or so and kind of making the gaming experience unplayable.
I know this must be some sort of Windows 7 issue since I have never had this problem before with XP and Vista. I have the latest drivers from nVidia both for my GeForce 6800GTS and my motherboard (nForce 650i Ultra) so that shouldn't be the issue.
Does someone know what this problem is caused by and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

can you verify which WDDM version u r using. you copen start menu and choose run, write DXDiag and hit enter. Go to the display tab and check the version. if it was WDDM 1.1 so its a prerelease drivers, so just uninstall this driver and use the vista driver.

Hi,
Sorry to bump an old thread but this problem is far too similar to mine to let it go unnoticed.
I play a game Heroes of Newerth which is a new game, a remake of that of the OP's first game, DotA.
I get 3 lag spikes, each lasting about 1 second inbetween each other, which occur every 7 minutes, consistently!!!
I am on Windows 7 too.
However, I had no issues on my previous router but then I changed ISP's and this problem has started. Now I presume it must be due to the router. Specifically the wireless of it as when plugged in via ethernet, there were no lag spikes. My brother, who runs on XP, also experienced the spikes at the EXACT same time as me, leading me to believe it must be 100% a wireless problem with the router...
Can anyone suggest otherwise and any possible solutions to this?
EDIT:
I should also mention these lag spikes occur when playing counter strike source too. It is not just on Heroes of Newerth.Wednesday, November 25, 2009 6:51 PM -

I have a similar issue except it started when I installed left 4 dead 2 on my computer though steam. Now every game I play regardless of graphics or how much it draws on from my processor will play and load normally but 4 minutes or so minutes into the game the frame rate will drop to 1 or 2 a second, this is last various lengths and the the game runs normally for 4 or so minutes. I checked and I do have WDDM 1.1 but would like some pointers on how to remove it please. Also I was hoping to avoid buying a new graphics card. I would bug steam for an answer but it effects a lot more that just steam gamesFriday, February 18, 2011 5:58 PM

Maybe keep process explorer in the system tray, and try to figure out the top process the next time it happens.
