Windows 7 Desktop won't retain size through reboot RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I am having a couple of issues I think related to a rootkit virus that Norton Security Suite found and corrected on my computer a couple of days ago.

One issue is that even though I set all my desktop icons to be "small" via the right-click Viw menu on the desktop every time I reboot thay are set back to the "medium" size when entering Windows 7.

I have tried every thing I can think of including setting them to "large", etc. but they always return as medium upon a reboot.

    Any help or suggestions?

    Thanks,

    -Dennis

  • Hi,

If so, seems the Icon cache is damaged. Please try the following fix. Also, change your theme to dafault.

  • Thank you,

I finally resolved this issue by using a tool called "Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Repair_Windows".

This also repaired a similiar problem which I was having in that my folder customization settings would not stay between reboots.

I appreciate your suggestions. Perhaps others might benefit from using this tool also. The link is http://majorgeeks.com/story.php?id=33985

I think the company also makes a firewall repair product which I have not tried but might be of interest to many.

Thanks again for your time and patience.

  • Hi,

Please check the following registry key.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
    "Shell Icon Size"="36"

When you change the Icons size, will the value be changed either? If not, please inspect the permission settings.

  • Hi,

I am able to access and change that value in the registry. I changed it to 16 and then rebooted. Unfortunately all the desktop icons were still at the medium size although I had set them at small. I went back into the registry and verified that the value was still set to 16.

    Thanks,

    -Dennis

  • Hi I run the Tweak repair tool twice in safe mode, and it dit not solve the problem with resizing the icons at each boot or reboot. I'M running Windows 10 with the latest anniversary update.

It is quite annoying constantly having to manually resize back to the old size.
