There is no sound even though all devices show as working, are not off, and supposedly there is no problem. What to do?

Question

There is no sounds. Suddenly. As of yesterday. I unplugged the USB speakers to use the laptop in another site (I do this often) and there was NO SOUND then or after wards. Not in the speakers. Not in the built in speakers. All devices show as working properly, USB speakers are identified when plugged, sound appears as ON (40% on internal speakers, lever 43 on USB speakers) but there is NO SOUND AT ALL.
I rebooted.
Computer says all jolly well but in reality there is no sound and I don't even know how to test it--computer's happy enough but MUTE.
Still the same.
Now what?

More often than not when a device isnt working it is because the driver has become corrupted. Re-installing a fresh copy should helphttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly?SignedIn=1

Hi,
To be added, You can try to use System File Checker tool to fix your problem. Please refer to the following link for detailed operation.

if the driver reinstall had no use, please try to Restore your PC to an earlier point in time for test. Please refer to the link below for more details about System Restore.
