flickr.com crashes IE10 RRS feed

  • Question

  • IE 10 (Modern or desktop) on my Win8ProMediaCenter-64 laptop is crashing every time I browse to flickr.com. If I get a chance to force compatibility mode before it crashes, when it restarts, it can open flickr.com. Machine is current with all patches. Have tried flushing IE cache and running IE in Safe Mode. Neither changed situation. Have another machine (a desktop Win8ProMediaCenter-64 also current with all patches) that works fine with flickr.com. Don't see issues with IE on other sites on the laptop. Writing this with IE 10 desktop from that laptop right now.

Any suggestions how to resolve this short of something truly invasive like creating a new user profile?

  • Hi,

Please try to us compatibility mode to view the side to see how it works.

Also, temporarily disable the firewall and anti-virus programs to test the result.

  • As noted in original posting. compatibility mode does make it work.

Just tried firewall off, defender real-time off. http://www.flickr.com appcrashes IE10. Every time.

  • I have the same problem, IE10, Windows 8, it doesn't matter whether I am logged in or out, it doesn't matter whether I'm in compatibility mode, it doesn't matter if I stand on one leg jumping up and down shouting "I'm a teapot". THE PROBLEM LIES WITH INCOMPATIBLE SYSTEMS NOT THE USERS. Can the developers of Flickr, IE10, Windows 8 et al get their collective wealthy heads together and stop people from getting high blood pressure and from ultimately going to alternative solutions. I don't want to use Firefox for my browser and I don't want to go to Google+, but if these problems continue, I and plenty of others will.

    Heap Corruption.

The path (and the rest of the paths in the list of loaded modules) would make one think that the OS is 32-bit, except that we are told that the OS is 64-bit, so I think that suggests that  EPM  may be involved.  And the crash symptom suggests that incompatible add-ons are probably involved too though there is no sign of them in this list.

If this symptom is easily reproducible I would suggest using ProcMon to trace what happens before the crash, e.g. to give some clues about what may be causing the Heap Corruption, since it could be something that is loaded and then unloaded.  And if it does not occur with EPM off you would have a better idea of why it happens, even if you couldn't identify a likely culprit any other way.

  • Hi,

Tools>Internet Options>Security tab, click "reset all zones to default"

Trusted Sites Icon, 'Sites' button ..... remove any yahoo domains... remove any facebook domains.

flickr is a yahoo site and they use common cdn's for geotracking.... they also use Facebook cdn's.

To protect your privacy when visiting sites

Tools>Tracking Protection to turn on IE's tracking protection.

    or

For public access computers, run IE in InPrivate mode... (Incogneto mode in other browsers)

there is a security setting in IE to prevent navigation into zones of lower integrity.

Your stack trace shows the fault originating from a module for mpeg image rendering..

Possibly when YOU visit the site invalid mpeg content is served (from flickr, an adserver or facebook).

Tools>Compatibility View Settings, check "Include updated website lists from Microsoft" (flickr.com is on the MS list to use the IE10 UAS but edge rendering).

If you have any toolbars installed (yahoo?)... you should test in noAddons mode first...

ntdll.dll errors are typical of device driver errors.... Do a windows update to ensure you have the latest driver updates for your screen or Start>Control Panel>Display

flickr has some compatibility issues that the modern.ie team are probably investigating.
