Can DPM write to multiple tape drives concurrently? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We're having a problem getting our nightly backups done in time - at times I need to back up 3-6TB of data to tape each night. The backups are currently going to a single LTO-4 drive in an autoloader and I'm thinking of adding an additional LTO-5 tape drive to the mix. Will DPM be able to write to both drives at once, or will the only speed increase I see come from the faster LTO-5 drive alone?

FWIW, I'm currently seeing about 100GB/hour to tape (with compression and hardware encryption enabled).

  • Hi,

Yes, after you add the new drive, modify the protection group and change the "drives allocated" from 1 to 2 in the "select library and tape details" pane.   DPM will then use both drives for backup jobs for that PG.  If you have multiple PG's, you can keep it at 1 drive if you like, and DPM will still write to both drives if the tape backup jobs start at the same time in each PG.
