Upgrade 2003 Sp2 Standard to Win 2008 RRS feed

  • Can i upgrade a windows 2003 sp2 virtual machine to windows 2008 standard. I have attempted but get error with crcdisk.sys on boot

  • Yes you should be able to. From that error and others online reporting the same thing I'd suspect your issue is due to drive compatibility for some of the virtual hardware once you're running 2008, eg the drive the 2003 VM is using isn't compatible with 2008. So once the 2008 VM starts up it's unable to use part of the hardware (possibly HDD controller) as the driver hasn't been loaded. As discussed here http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/questions/in-place-upgrade-from-windows-2003-domain-controller-to-windows-2008/ and elsewhere, the resolve is to either re-install the 2008 installation (essentially repair it) but choosing the option to select drivers, or (perhaps more straight forward), ensure your 2003 install prior to upgrade (if you haven't done it yet) has the latest drivers for everything, and those drivers support 2008. If all the drivers that 2003 is using also support 2008 then it should upgrade without any problems since they'll work immediately.
