Why the WHOLE system hangs while reading bad CD/DVD? RRS feed

  • Question

  • In Windows (both Vista and XP) the system hangs while trying to read a bad CD/DVD. In Vista Ultimate it hangs so bad that I can't even call task manager. Windows Explorer, taskbar, desktop stop responding. And I'm not asking how to turn on DMA (it's turned on), change firmware etc.
My question is: why the WHOLE system hangs when you try to open a bad disk? Why does the system depend so much on a CD/DVD drive and hangs when something goes wrong with it?
