OEM eMachines OS on another computer. RRS feed

  • Question

  •

Hi, I have purchased an eMachine for my daughter to keep all of her photos on and do some webbing. She can just get around in XP and does not want to try Vista. Unfortunately, the eMachine came with Vista. I am going to buy an XP distro so she can be comfortable.

My question is, is there any way I can use the eMachine Vista on a non eMachine computer? It seems a shame to have to throw away a good copy of Vista. If I just use the install disk from the new computer, I can imagine having bios identification issues or some other failure.

Can I salvage a copy of Vista I purchased?

    Thanks, Al K.

  • If your eMachines computer came with a copy of OEM Vista, you cannot use it on another computer. It is forever locked to that hardware. Any other use is unauthorized.

  • Hi Al Kitchen,
The Windows OEM EULA states that you cannot tranfer and OEM software from one machine to another. In other words an OEM software comes with a machine and dies with a machine. Since the sofware has been installed and used you will not be able to return it back.
