Downgrade Internet Explorer 8 in Windows XP SP3 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

I have a desktop with Windows XP SP3 (Dell OEM). IE 8 works fine before. Now I have a webapp which only could be ran on IE 7 or below. I followed this article to uninstall IE 8.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700#stepsforxp

After restart, I checked my current version is Internet Explorer 7, but IE cannot be launched at all. iexplorer.exe shows in TaskManager in a short time. I was noticed iedw.exe was running when this problem occured.

So I plan to uninstall IE 7. I tried all the method in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177

1.There is no Internet Explorer 7 in Add or Remove Programs.

    2.I cannot find %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe.

I can reinstall IE 8, then it works properly. I need a resolution, please help on this.

  • Hi Vincenzo,

I had tried reset IE. And after uninstalling IE 8, I cannot find internet Explorer 7 in Add or Remove Programs.  So I cannot reinstall IE 7.

On the other hand, I cannot find Service Pack 3 in Add or Remove Programs (show update) since this OS is provide from Dell.

I'm very confuse on this problem. If I could uninstal Service Pack 3, I could try to uninstall IE 8 again. (This maybe off topic in this forum)

Or I could find a way to make IE 7 working properly in this forum.

  • Please see and follow carefully this MSKB ("Internet Explorer opens, flashes, and then closes immediately when you start it").

If you need more assistance about Windows XP SP3 please ask for help in the Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) TechNet Forum.

    Or contact Dell Support.

    Best of Luck,

  • Hi,

I tried all the method in this KB:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967896/en-us

Unfortunately, this problem still there. I noticed that iedw.exe was running at that time. Could get any log from it? Or could I find any related information? (log or crash dump)

    Thanks

  • Hi ,

You may run the webapp in IE7 Compatibility Mode.

Please refer to the part of Compatibility Lists (“Emulate IE7” mode) in the following link:
