Alternative predecessors and fixed budget in MS Project RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I have two questions that I'm not able to find an answer:

    1) How do I create alternative predecessors in MS Project? for example, in the below situation, how to depict Class 3?

    • Class 1
    • Class 2
    • Class 3 (per-requisites: Class 1 OR Class 2)

    2) How to create a fixed budget for a project and monitor the budget allocation against that fixed budget?

  • I'm afraid predecessors are not either/or but "later of the two".  I'm assuming you want to start class 3 after the finish of the earlier Class 1 or Class 2.  That would require manual intervention.

Regarding a budget - you can use budget cost resources.  See:

    http://ntrajkovski.com/2011/12/05/setting-up-the-project-budget/

for information about how to set up the budget resources.

You can then create a bottoms up cost plan by assigning resources to tasks.  Saved a baseline before tracking and you can compare your plan (baseline) against actual costs.

  • Thank you for the answer about the budget cost resources.

So how do I manual intervene the classes? I do want to start Class 3 after students finish either class 1 OR class 2.

  • I'd create a link between both Class 1 and Class 2 after updating either class 1 or class two as complete, remove the link from the other class.  You'll need to keep an eye on it and update your project frequently.
