Folder Redirection/User Folder problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • I posted this question in the Server General Forum in January, just now re-visiting this issue and saw I shouldn't have posted in the Server General Forum.  Here is my problem:

SBS 2011 Standard, I tried to enable folder redirection.  Out of 5 win7pro and 3 XPpro computers, only 2 win7 and 1 XP computer/user were successful.  In trying to get the other computers/users working, and searching posts on this, I tried various permission settings.  Unfortunately, due to a post somewhere that I probably should not have believed, I also tried changing permissions on the User folder, not just the redirected folders subfolder.  I think I've got permissions pretty messed up.

(after backing up desktop/my doc's folders on the client computers that worked), I disabled Redirected Folders in the SBS console, and thinking to start fresh, I deleted the three user folders & subfolders from the User folder on the SBS.  After trying various permissions and rebooting several times (SBS and clients) now only one user folder was recreated and seems to be working as I would expect, which is my account, which has Domain Admin rights.  Now the other two that *were* working have not recreated their user folders on the SBS.

I need to set permissions correctly, but it seems that I'm missing something, for example, an instruction might say "set the following permissions...." but it doesn't say whether it is for this folder only, or all subfolders also.

If someone could provide a link that tells exactly what I need, that would be much appreciated.  Or, at least, could someone tell me what permissions the User folder needs to have, then I could at least eliminate the User folder as the problem.

A couple of people had answered my previous post, providing links to how to setup redirected folders, but since I messed around so much with folder permissions, I'm not sure what I have now.  At this time, folders have been created, but even though I went back into the SBS console several times and tried setting it up as described, nothing is being redirected.  I *assume* because of permission problems, but don't really know.

is there any way to "start over" just on the folder redirection/Users folder.  Everything else works fine.  Hate to reinstall just for that.

    Thanks, Steve

  • Hello Steve,

Open RSOP.MSC and go to properties of User Configuration and post the error. Do you see the SMB path in the properties of the redirected folder?

  • ON a windows 7 client, under User Configuration Properties, Properties, Error Information, Folder Redirection

    all it says is:

Folder Redirection failed due to the error listed below.
    Cannot complete this function.

    Not very helpful, I'm afraid.

    Thanks, Steve

Please try this above link with a test user. If it work for test user and doesn't work for existing user then we need to check whats wrong going one. You might need to be some more patience before this gets resolved.

Thanks & Regards, Naga Santosh EPS(SBS)
