Some updates were not installed, XP Professional SP3, no error codes(?) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I posted the following to http://answers.microsoft.com but I'm starting to get worried about the length of time of vulnerability.

I tried to update windows and got the message that "Some updates were not installed".  I turns out that all of them were not installed.  I surfed the web and found this to be a common problem.  I have XP Professional SP3, and haven't repaired or installed from the installation CD.  I also have not noticed any error code specification, though I'm not sure where or when such a code would be specified.

The following indicates that it might be malware, but likelihood is very small in my case.  I have three antimalware apps installed, updating and scanning every night.  The apps are Avast AV, Spybot S&D, and MalwareBytes. Plus, I visit very boring sites.

The following blames it on the Windows update agent, but the thread is somewhat old (2007).  So I decided to forgo this one in favour of a more recent thread about update agents.  Plus, it didn't seem to work for many thread participants.

The following seemed to work for many thread participants, and refers to a Microsoft Knowledgebase article:
    http://forums.techarena.in/windows-update/996155.htm

    The knowledgebase article is:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

I tried both solutions in this KB but without success, even after a reboot.  I am seeking other solutions.  Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Thanks for the suggestion, Vegan.  I've been advised in no uncertain terms that this is a viral infection.  I will focus on pulling data off of the machine and retiring it.
