Windows 2008 64bit - Server Manager refresh generates error 0x8000ffff RRS feed

  • Question

  • Problem: I open server manager and click on Features and instead of populating the list, I get an error at the bottom:

    Unexpected error refreshing Server Manager: Catastrophic failure (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED))

    I noticed this problem yesterday and rebooted the server to try and fix it but no such luck. I've tried running sfc /scannow but it never even starts, just waits a minute and then generates this error:

    Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

    Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

    There are three errors which keep repeating in CBS.log

    2011-06-21 19:15:33, Error                 CSI    00000007 (F) E_UNEXPECTED #116# from Windows::COM::CComponentStore::InternalTransact(...)[gle=0x8000ffff]

    2011-06-21 19:15:36, Error                 CSI    00000009 (F) E_UNEXPECTED #115# from Windows::ServicingAPI::CCSIStore_ICSIStore2::BeginTransaction(flags = (ICSISTORE2_BEGINTRANSACTION_FLAG_DONT_FAIL_IF_TX_MERGE_IMPOSSIBLE), de = {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}, cti = (null), riid = {b891714f-67db-4eca-8881-e5932a0f0f94}, ppt = ppt, disp = disp)[gle=0x8000ffff]

    Also, this shows up repeatedly in WindowsUpdate.log:

    2011-06-21 18:13:56:707 532 139c Agent WARNING: Failed to evaluate Installable rule, updateId = {DF85E7C0-4F46-4399-9537-57061E84C9F2}.102, hr = 8000FFFF

    I have searched and searched online and tried multiple things but nothing has come close to fixing this yet. I hope someone out there will be able to help, otherwise I'm just not able to do anything else with this server except format, which would be a HUGE task to take on....thanks!

  • I was able to fix this if anyone encounters the same issue. I just followed the directions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414

    Go to registry and delete the following keys (i only had two of the three and it worked anyways):

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\PendingXmlIdentifier
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\NextQueueEntryIndex
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

    Reboot and that's it!

  • This Worked for me. (couldn't install updates on server 2008 r2)

    CBS log kept saying:

    Pending transaction content must be resolved, cannot begin another transaction yet.

    Deleting the 3 reg entries and restarting resolved the issue.

    Another symptom I had was that the Roles and Features sections of Computer Manager would not refresh (meaning you couldn't install a feature, among other things)

    Thank you very much for this responding to your own question with this answer it saved me rebuilding our primary production sql server. (Server was working ok other than the fact that I couldn't install MPIO without this fix...)

  • anyone...anything?? i read reinstalling .net framework might help resolve the issue but don't want to needlessly reboot the server. anyone think this might actually do something?
