What's being cached and why? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Why is there a cache in AppData\Local\Microsoft\Power Query\Cache? What gets cached? Why not just use the webclient cache like IE? Do datasources need to specify (because PQ follows) the cache policies specified in HTTP headers?

  • We cache data from all types of data sources used in evaluations to speed things up where possible. When you open the query editor, you can see if it's a cached result by looking in the bottom right of the screen. It might say something like "Preview downloaded on 5/15/2014". That's showing you a result from the cache instead of making you wait for a fresh result. You can always force a full evaluation by clicking the Refresh button in the query editor ribbon (on the Home tab.)

There are some features coming that will help you manage the size/age of your cache in case you need to tweak things from the default.
