Distribution component really needed to be installed? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our company has an existing WSUS server already running, its a Win 2k8 64-bit edition WSUS box.  Now, i know that FFCS does NOT support 64-bit or R2.  However, I have read that you can get away with NOT having to actually install the distribution component as its basically just doing some FFCS auto approvals for download/deploy on the WSUS Server.

Can anyone shed some light on this situation.  What is the best way of handling this situation?

Should I have them setup a separate WSUS server or would this be ridick to this of doing?

We are going to be implementing a 3-server topology for less than 3000 workstations/servers.

  • Bechir - thanks for the update.  WOW, why doesn't Microsoft state this on technet?  So you are telling me - distribution role does not need to be installed UNLESS you have WSUS 2.0?

You can find the info in the FCS official blog http://blogs.technet.com/b/fcsnerds/archive/2009/07/27/distribution-component.aspx

  • Hi

The client wasn't support in W7 and R2. But now it is support:

So you can use your WSUS R2 server.

  • Hi,

I add, you don't need to install distribution server role if you have WSUS 3.0 because it for WSUS 2.0. Please note that the FCS distrubution role is only properly configured WSUS 2.0 which gives it the ability to sync once an hour and not once a day as it is before this update.

  • Bellard - thanks for the response but maybe i didn't clear my wording up.  I don't want to INSTALL the forefront client ON the WSUS.  I need to install the FOREFRONT SERVER DISTRIBUTION COMPONENT on to USE the existing WSUS server as the Distribution server in the forefront 3-server topology.
