Can't uninstall SCOM agent from console RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi-

We have approx 300 servers that we need to uninstall the SCOM agent on. They were all installed using the console, no manual installs. On any node, when I try to uninstall I get the following error:

    Operation: Agent Uninstall
    Install account: AD\NameofAccount
    Error Code: 80070002
Error Description: The system cannot find the file specified.

I have no idea what file it is looking for. I can RDP onto the server with the same credentials and manually uninstall it without any problem. Also, we tried several accounts, including a domain admin account... same error.

Any ideas? This is SCOM R2 on 32 bit Win2003.

    Thanks, Michael

  • ok Michael,

a file not found error should be easy to trace, in your configuration we can have it on the RMS or on the agent. I would suggest to use procmon from Russinovich (live.sysinternals.com) starting on the RMS side since every agent has the same behavior and check for any file not found error. Once we understand which is the missing file we can try to understand what's missing. Another test you can do is disable the antivirus on one agent and try to remove it.

  • Hi Michael,

a file not found error is usually easy to troubleshoot, a few questions:

    1) are you able to install new agents

    2) is any log file generated under <<OMdir>>\AgentManagement\AgentLogs

    3) are you managing your agents via the RMS, MS or Gateway

  • Hi Daniele-

I am able to install new agents, no issues there. There are log files in the <<OMdir>>\AgentManagement\AgentLogs dir, however, I don't see any that get updated when I try and do the console uninstall task... so I'm not seeing any error about the uninstall. The logs concerning the node I'm trying to uninstall from look fine, i.e. there were no errors during the install.  I am managing the agents via the RMS. All agents also show up as Remotely Manageable too. This 80070002 failure happens when I try and uninstall any node.

    Thank you, Michael

  • Also, these agents were installed with the default path, no changes to that were made.
