software update license requirements for clients

I currently have a WSUS 3.0 server running on our network, and I'm about to deply System Center 2012 SP1. One of the new features is the SUP role, which communicates with WSUS for managing updates. I did not purchase any licenses for desktop nodes, as this is intended primarily for DPM. Do I need a license for each desktop node to use SUP? If so, I will continue to use WSUS as it is configured now.

You will require a license for any and all machines that have the ConfigMgr client installed on them. Desktops are a bit less expensive than servers I think. TO use the SUP you obviously need the client installed. So yes, you need a license to use the SUP.

Not following your question exactly. The SUP is a role of ConfigMgr so you need to have an ML for every device you plan to manage with ConfigMgr. There is no per-role or feature licensing.
