Permissions assigned to Team Members RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone,

I have limited knowledge of Project Server 2010...In past days I've created a new PWA, created the necessary resources and assigned the permissions.  When I access the projects from the Project Web App the permissions behave as expected, for example the user doesn't have permission to assign resources to tasks so the drop down list is disabled.  When I access the same project from Project Professional 2010 the permissions don't work, the user is able to add/remove resources without any problems.

Is this the expected behavior or I'm missing something?!!!

    Thanks

    Kevin

  • Hi Kevin

I would recommend reading the security article on technet : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197571(v=office.14).aspx specifically the Groups & Categories settings that will give you a lot of clarity on what you are trying to achieve, as there are more than one factors that affect user security

Typically if a user has permission to assign resource on a project in Project pro, he should be able to assign resource in Project Web App(PWA) as well

For an immediate option try changing the user group to Team Lead and then they should not be able to assign resources

Let us know if this helps

  • Hi Sunil,

    Thanks for the reply

I have tried that already but still the users can assign resources from Project Pro but not PWA....so PWA is working as expected but not Pro...I have even set the permission "New Resource" to deny but still the user can just type in a new resource and assign to a task.

I will go through the article you've sent me, I must be missing something!!

  • Hi Kevin

if you can post the permission snapshot i would be able to point out the permission issue

however reading the technet article should give you enough info to rectify it

  • Hi Kevin,

Denying this New Resource permission will only deny addition of enterprise resource, however user still can define  local resource in the project and create assignment using local resource.

You can verify this by going to Resource center and check if that the same resource added by the user exist in resource center or not. Only enterprise resource can be found in resource center.

hope this answers to your query.

  • Hi Khurram,

    Thanks for the update...

I checked the resource center and the user is there with the same permissions...so really not sure what is my problem!!

  • Hi Kevin

have you altered any permission or they are default, if you haven't changed any permission settings then you may want to try this, in ideal scenario if everything is OK, it should work, assign user to team member group and for team members group permission check the permission view projects in project center, try this out and let me know

  • Hi Sunil,

I tried to manually changed permissions in order to give less permissions and try to stop users from assigning resources to tasks but as I mentioned at the begining of the post, permissions work as expected from the PWA but not from Project Professional:(

    Thanks

  • Hi Kevin,

I think you have missed a point in my reply, let me try to explain again.

There are two type of resources we deal with, local and enterprise. By denying New Resource group permission, you avoid users to add any resurce to enterprise pool i.e. from PWA and Project both.

    http://ntrajkovski.wordpress.com/2012/06/29/enterprise-resources-in-ms-project-sever-2010/

However, users are still be able to define local resource in Project Professional and assign to tasks. but these will be local resource not enterprise resource, and hence you can only see them while browsing project schedule in PWA or Project Professional.

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/project-help/add-resources-to-your-project-HA010377762.aspx

And if you will try to create New Resource in resource center, you will see the option disabled for you because you have denied that permission.

And  as i understood from your question that your users are still able to add resources from Project although you have denied that permission. and its happening because of this design.

    hope this helps.

  • Khurram,

I understand...let me give an example...

I have built a resource team using the enterprise pool, in the PWA the dropdown list for a given task is disabled so I cannot even assign a resource from the enterprise pool.  With the same user I can assign a resource from the enterprise pool...I must be missing something!!

    Thanks
