Gadgets missed. Yes, that old thread is back again.... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi. Recently I lost my gadgets. I have readed many threads about it and I tried everything:

    - Show desktop gadgets is ON

    - I turned ON UAC: nothing

    - Regedit (you know): nothing

    - Program and features: gadget platform OFF, restart, then ON, restart... nothing

However, I created a second administrator account and with this account the gadgets work. OK, I know I can delete my old account and stay with the new, but I have to do a lot of changes and simply I don't want to. What I need to know is why this happens? It's not the first time, but last time I formatted (no only because of the gadgets, of course)

  • If the gadgets work OK if you create a new user account, maybe there's a bad setting in the "per-user" configuration file, Settings.ini, in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and click Task Manager. Click the Processes tab, select Sidebar.exe, and then click End Process. Now open the Start menu, type the following in the search box and press ENTER:

    %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar

    Delete the Settings.ini file.

Finally try to add the gadgets again and see if they are working.

  • Thanks, but I done this 3 times (I don't remember it when I wrote the first post), and: nothing.

It's really starnge what happens: most gadgets don't appears, but, i.e., the clock (standard gadget) shows a rectangle with 1 (only one) hand.

Could you upload some screenshots? Which version of Internet Explorer are you using?

  • Internet Explorer?

IE9 9.0.8112.16421, and I have Windows Update set to automatic, so I have everything up to date.

Here is a snapshot of my desktop: http://cid-7d978f255e885bc4.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/screen.jpg

I marked the gadget and the real time.

  • Hi,

Base on the issue that you have at the moment, several things might have caused this to occur. So we cannot simply determine the root cause for this.

Please try the following steps to troubleshooting the issue, then we can get more information and decide the root cause:

    1.       Temporarily disable UAC and try again.

    2.       Click Start button, chose “All Programs-> Accessories”, right click the Command Prompt, click Run as Administrator. Type the following command in Command Prompt:

    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\wlsrvc.dll"

    regsvr32 atl.dll

    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sbdrop.dll"

Since it is work fine when you create a new account, I just wonder if any third-party software cause this issue, you could perform a Clean Boot to check this.

If you have further question or description for this problem, please don’t hesitate let me know.

    Hope that helps

  • Well... nothing works.

I disabled the UAC, run the commands, done a clean boot, and everythig remains the same.

I asked on nVidia forums, but since the gadgets worked with another account, we (me and the nVidia guys) suspect the problem is not caused by the video drivers.

Anyway, I can't understand why this happens but it appears to be a definite problem.
