Incomplete BitLocker Encryption - Locked HardDrive - Please Help! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I was running bitlocker encryption on an external Hard Drive.

I got a "Blue Screen" error that shutdown my computer when Encryption was 2/3 of the way.

I never had a Password or Key, but now the Drive appears to be locked.

I ran manage-bde -resume (but it says "It's locked").

    I ran manage-bde -status:

    Size: Unknown GB
    BitLocker Ver: Win 7
    Conversion Status: Unknown
    % Encrypted: Unknown%
Encryption Method: AES 128 with Diffuser
    Protection Status: Unknown
    Lock Status: Locked
    ID Field: Unknown
    Automatic Unlock: Disable
    Key Protectors:
       Numerical Password

All help will be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

  • Hi,

I want to confirm that have you used this drive in any other PC, where you might have accidently locked it. If you connect back to the original PC, it might auto-unlock on that machine.

If you were on a corporate environment and it got locked due to corporate policy when connecting the device to your office laptop, your admin might be able to help you unlock that.

We may try the bitlocker repair tool and check if it helps:

Scenario 16: Using the BitLocker Repair Tool to Recover a Drive:

Have you kept the recovery key? If yes, please refer to the link:

If not, I’m afraid there is no way for you to access the data protected by BitLocker, your best bet is data recovery specialist.

    Best Regards,

  • Thanks, I did try in the same machine and in other machines... it looks locked in all.

I was never given a recovery key (as the process didn't finish).

I was indeed in a business environment and although I have admin rights am liaising with someone on my IT to see if they can rescue. I will also try the Repair Tool.
