Procedure for Transfering Servers between sites RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have two DPM sites that are linked with a 4mb link. One is a master site the other a backup site.

All works well with one exception, and I have emailed a number of people but got no reply, so that is why I am posting this here.

My servers can be large (ie. 320gb) and when I need to add a server to our backup site, this may not happen or it will take a very long time. It also affects all other traffic.

I have a tape drive on both sites, what I would like to do is to backup to tape on one site and restore from tape on the backup site and then continue to synchronize the data between the sites using the 4mb link.

I cannot find any documentation showing how this can be done.

It must be something that can be done with the current version, but I am not sure how to do it.

Can anyone out there help me?

  • Hey,

    In short:

Site A will be the primary one where the new server is placed and Site B the secondary server where the data needs to be transfered to and which you will want secondary protection to.

    - Take a backup of the data to tape and transport it to site B.
    - At Site B, enable the protection of your new server and say that you will manually do the initial replication
    - At Site B, when the tape has arrived.  Recatalog it in your secondary DPM server.  After that, do a restore to a network or file location.
    - After that, follow the procedure from technet to place the replica on the correct spot and then do a consistency check (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399552.aspx)

    Hope it helps

    Cheers,
