Win 10 installation on new hard drive when old failed drive was Win 8.0

    Question

  • Dell replaced my hard drive for me that had Win 8.0 installed. It had not been upgraded to Win 10 at the time of failure.

I am creating an install USB drive now per Dell instructions, but will I need the old Win 8.0 auth code?  I do not have the old Win 8.0 auth code.  The replacement cd indicates a multicolored label would be on my pc with the CoA, but I have looked all over for it, and there is no such label on my tower.  The bad drive has already been returned with the tech who installed it.

Bottom line, is the old code required, and if so, is there any way of finding out what it is?

    Thanks very much,

  • Thank you, but I ended up trying to enter the old Win 8 key, which did not work, and then I gave up and bought a new license from the Microsoft store.  It was easy, but costly.  I have no intention of ever contacting Dell Support ever again so that suggestion was not an option.

    Thanks very much, tiredbroad53

  • If it in the UEFI Bios it will be picked up (but perhaps not visible), beyond that it was on the disk. Either way contact Dell with this question.
