Cannot apply Windows 2008 R2 SP1 : Error 0x8007002 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

    I'm trying to apply the SP1 update on a W2K8 R2.

When I ran the updater, it eventually fail with the error 0X80070002 FILE_NOT_FOUND.

When I take look at the CBS log, I can see :

    2012-03-09 11:32:51, Info CBS Exec: Staging Package: Package_1_for_KB2603229~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0, Update: 2603229-2_neutral_GDR, PinDeployment: amd64_ffe9028cb809490cc9838f2776a3a3b9_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17671_none_6dbf65d17b1a8068

It states that the file UpdateWowRegisteredOwner.exe is missing. The winsxs path (amd64_microsoft-windows-g..ewowregisteredowner_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.21795_none_e42bf4a6d49ce583) actually does not exists.

This files exists in other places, but with a different file version.

What can I do to solve this issue ?

FYI, I've ran sfc.exe /scannow and it says that everything is ok.

Thanks in advance for the help

  • I finally have been able to solve my issue.

First, I ran this command (not sure of the package name though):

    dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514

Then, I have to solve a number of missing drivers issue as desbribed here : How To Fix ERROR_NOT_FOUND 0×80070490 During Windows 7 SP1 Installation

Then, the SP1 finally installed succesful.

    What a hard path :(

  • 1/ verify that KB976932 is installed on your server before SP1 installation

    Isn't the KB976932 the SP1 itself ? It's the one I'm trying to install.

2/ reinit the update folder as explain in this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336

I'm trying to install the sp1 using the standalone installer.

I've also tried to follow instructions on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821, but it didn't show any errors.

  • Hi,

From the CBS logging, we could notice that the similar error:

    Failed to find file;
    Failed to gather all required files;
    Failed to gather all missing file for package;

It seems that there are some necessary files corrupted or missing. And I noticed that it’s a standalone installation NOT WSUS or other similar tools.

So based on the current situation, I suggest that you need to run the Windows Update to verify whether there are some necessary updates installed before installing Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

At the same time, I think you could run the CheckSUR tool (System Update Readiness Tool) to verify whether there are some related errors or warnings included. For the detailed information about the CheckSUR tool, you could refer to the link below:

Title: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2
    URL: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

BTW, The System Update Readiness Tool creates a log file that captures any issues that the tool found or fixed. The log file is located at the following location:

    %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
    %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

    James,

Thanks for your feedbac. As I said in my previous post, I have run the CheckSUR tool. The log does not mention any error.

The exact content of this log is :

I also recheck the available updates in WU. This service pack is the only one update that is not yet applied.

  • Hi Steve,

Could you please enable verbose CBS logging first and reinstall the SP1 manually as below.

    •  Go to Computer->Properties->Advanced System Settings->Environment Variables and add a new system variable called WINDOWS_TRACING_FACILITY_POQ_FLAGS with value 10000.
    •     Reboot the server.
    •     Manually install the SP1 with the link above.
    •     Please upload the CBS.log (c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log) and let me know the exact occurance time.

Should you have any problem, please let me know. Thanks for your time.

    Kevin, thanks for your instructions.

I did not find any way to upload in this forum, so I upload it to my skydrive account. Here is the public link : https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=cc6269be53bc0437&resid=CC6269BE53BC0437!1285&parid=root. Let me know if I should use another way.

The zip files contains three folders, which can be considered as "snapshots" of my CBS log folder. Actually, I have done this steps :

    1. activated the verbose logging as you suggested
    2. emptied the CBS log folder
    3. ran the command line "sfc.exe /scannow". Copied the CBS log folder in "1.CBS after sfc scannow"
    4. applied "Windows6.1-KB947821-v20-x64.msu". Copied the CBS log folder in "2.CBS after Windows6.1-KB947821-v20-x64.msu"
    5. ran "W2K8R2-SP1-KB976932-X64.exe". Copied the CBS log folder in "3.CBS after W2K8R2-SP1-KB976932-X64.exe"

In the CBS.log file, you will the first occurence of the error (0x80070002) at 2012-03-15 12:13:42, line 321025 precisely.

FYI, I've made another small test after trying your steps:

    1. from another computer with the sp1 applied, I get the missing file (amd64_microsoft-windows-g..ewowregisteredowner_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.21795_none_e42bf4a6d49ce583\UpdateWowRegisteredOwner.exe).
    2. I put this file at the exact location where the SP1 installer try to find it.
    3. I ran sfc /scannow. It fixed this file
    4. I tried to install the SP1. It still fails, with the same error, but with another version of the file (6.1.xxx.xxx instead of 6.1.7601.21795). I don't remember exactly which version.

    thanks for your help

    steve
