Expanding capacity (URGENT) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a scenario where the client originally had FIM 2010, then installed Rollup 2 (build 4.0.3606.2), then upgraded to FIM 2010 R2, and then applied hotfix 4.1.2515.0.

The client wants to expand the capacity and hence want to add new FIM Service/Portal/SSPR Portals. What is the process for this? They install FIM 2010 RTM or R2 RTM first and then install the hotfixes? Can anybody please help?

    Thanks,
    John

  • There were some issues in 2010 where adding certain hoxfixes updated the FIM Service DB so that a new service install didn't recognize the database, but I haven't heard of this existing in the R2 hotfix.

In that case, you simply install additional 2010 R2 Service, Portal and SSPR portals.

If you followed the product directions for SSPR and set the SPN to the machine identity, you will need to change to App Pool Creds in order to scale this out - remove the existing domain\machine$ one and register domain\user and make sure your website has 'useAppPoolCredentials' set true.

You might want to mention that adding those will increase the server license bill for FIM.

  • Thanks Frank for the quick and valuable response! All the SPNs have been taken care of - just in the process of installing FIM. So we need to simply install R2 RTM build and apply the patches.

    Thanks!

  • Are you going to use load balancing? If so, there was another thread about SSPR reset and load balancing on here.

The basic idea was that the FIM service runs on ports 5725 and 5726 and the user needs to stay on the same server across both connections.

  • Yes, we are using Load Balancer. We already have 2 instances of all FIM portal (including SSPR) behind the LB - just need to add another one.

We did configure the LB to have stickyness and persistency for SSPR to work.

    Thanks again!
