In WSUS some Windows 10 PCs show they need 35 updates but don't get them

Question
-
Hello,
In WSUS a few PCs show they need 35 updates and don't get them. If I go to the PCs and choose "check for updates" they say the device is up to date?
What can I do to troubleshoot this issue please?
Thanks

Hi. Have you either manually approved the updates or set up an automatic approval rule in the WSUS console? Without an approval in place, client machines won't download the updates.Friday, March 17, 2017 3:05 PM

Hi TB303,
1. What is the version of the WSUS server?
2. Please check if the status in WSUS server is up to date, check if the clients report to the WSUS server recently; Also check if the needed updates are approved on the WSUS server as Stu Cousins suggested;
3. On the WSUS server, please run Server Cleanup Wizard, and check if they are errors in WSUS event log;
4. On the WSUS clients, also reset Windows Update components, check if it could help:

Hi TB303,
Can we also check that you have Win 10 selected in the Products and Classifications dialog box?

Hello,
I'm running it on Windows 2012R2 = 6.3
I've just noticed under Options > Products and Classifications > Windows 10 is not selected.
I guess if this is selected the WSUS will sync and download them? Sorry new to this, not sure who un-ticked this, maybe this is the issue? After selecting those options the Windows 10 PC will download them (GPO time specific I know) is that right?
As a test should I un-approval all Windows 10 updates and try 1 against an OU?
I just don't want all the approved updates to kick for all users once I enable the options under Products and Classifications, I need a test/safety measure.
Thanks

It looks like Windows 10 updates are not there to be approved anyway as Windows 10 is not selected in Products and Classifications?
If I enable them, then syn the updates will be there to approve?
Thanks

Hi TB,
The Win 10 updates will be visible in your WSUS console once the metadata has been downloaded (i.e. you've selected Win 10 in the Products and Classifications dialog box). This metadata download schedule is determined by your synchronisation settings, but you can start a sync. manually.
Once you can see the Win 10 updates in WSUS you can choose the ones you want to approve. I'd recommend you put a few machines into a test group/OU in the WSUS console (depends whether you're using server or client side targeting) and push out patches to those machines until you're confident on the process and you get the results you expect.
Then check your GPO settings and make sure you're happy with those before you deploy updates to all your machines.
I hope this helps.

Hello,
Yes these updates are now downloaded to the WSUS server and I've moved 2 test PC's to a test OU and WSUS can see these in there. I've approved them and the test PC's see them when I go to "windows update" (not from the internet).
- Both have been stuck on Downloading updates 0% for an hour or so though, is that normal? Many updates too (anniversary etc).
- rebooted 1 and says it's uptodate but in WSUS says it needs 61 updates. Tried wuauclt /detectnow and wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
Thanks

Any ideas why the PC's shows 0 updates locally and not on WSUS?Friday, March 24, 2017 11:29 AM
-
Hi TB303,
What is the version of the Windows 10, are they win10 1607? If they are unpatched windows 10 1607, please install the monthly rollup manually, then, check if they can update other updates from WSUS server:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4000825/windows-10-windows-server-2016-update-history
If they are win10 1511 or pervious version, and they are also downloading 1607 upgrade(anniversary update) from WSUS server, then please ensure the 1607 upgrade is downloaded after WSUS server patched with KB3095113 and KB3159706(with manual steps), also ensure .esd MIME type is added in WSUS iis site.
Best Regards,
Anne

It could very well be an issue with the WSUS Server. Run my cleanup script and see if that resolves your issues. I've seen it work wonders on WSUS but in the case of the 1607 initial build, like Anne says, you need to install a CU after September 2016 as it's a known issue that 1607 RTM contains a bug that will prevent it from communicating with WSUS properly.
Have a peek at my Adamj Clean-WSUS script. It is the last WSUS Script you will ever need.
http://community.spiceworks.com/scripts/show/2998-adamj-clean-wsus
What it does:
1. Remove all Drivers from the WSUS Database.
2. Shrink your WSUSContent folder's size by declining superseded updates.
3. Remove declined updates from the WSUS Database.
4. Clean out all the synchronization logs that have built up over time (configurable, with the default keeping the last 14 days of logs).
5. Compress Update Revisions.
6. Remove Obsolete Updates.
7. Computer Object Cleanup (configurable, with the default of deleting computer objects that have not synced within 30 days).
8. Application Pool Memory Configuration to display the current private memory limit and easily increase it by any configurable amount.
9. Run the Recommended SQL database Maintenance script on the actual SQL database.
10. Run the Server Cleanup Wizard.
It will email the report out to you or save it to a file, or both.
Although the script is lengthy, it has been made to be super easy to setup and use. There are some prerequisites and instructions at the top of the script. After installing the prerequisites and configuring the variables for your environment, simply run:
.\Clean-WSUS.ps1 -FirstRun
and then
.\Clean-WSUS.ps1 -InstallTask
If you wish to view or increase the Application Pool Memory Configuration, you must run it with the required switch. See Get-Help .\Clean-WSUS.ps1 -Examples
If you're having trouble, there's also a -HelpMe option that will create a log so you can send it to me for support.Sunday, May 14, 2017 3:09 AM -
This script is utterly brilliant! It fixed all the following WSUS problems I was experiencing:
- 30% of the 500+ clients were listed as 'Not yet reported' and never changed.
- Another 20% of the clients had not updated in over a month or more, despite checking every day.
- A lot of clients were reporting those classic obscure MS errors, particularly 0x800705b4
As a bonus, it trimmed the WSUS repository from 800GB down to 400GB!
This is all despite the fact that I was religiously running the MS WSUS DB maintenance script and Server Cleanup once a month.
Can't thank you enough for this amazing script.
