List view threshold error on stop inheriting permissions RRS feed

  • Question

  • We just migrated a large file share onto sharepoint online and getting the list view threshold error trying to stop inheriting permission for the document library.

We cleaned up two folders which had more than 5000 files by creating subdirectories. But the error persists. What could be the problem? There are no longer any sub folders with more than 5000 files in the doc library.

    Any help would be welcome.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

    Do you have subfolders?

If a folder contains subfolders, each subfolder is counted as an item (but not any items in that subfolder).

Besides, if you move items into the SharePoint Recycle Bin, those items will still be counted when determining whether the filter expression exceeds the List View Threshold. You need to clear the recycle bin , and then they will not no longer counted.

    Best regards,

    Linda

  • I do have subfolders and I did assume that under any folder in the entire tree, if the number of subfolders  + number of files exceed 5000, this problem will  occur. But that limit  was not crossed.

Strangely, the suspect subfolder, by itself could be given unique permissions. Unless there is a folder depth issue here as well, I can't figure out why the limit was being hit.

  • Hi,

The maximum number of unique security scopes set for a list/library cannot exceed 50,000. It is a threshold.

    Refer to SharePoint Online limits:

    Best regards,
