WSUS updates failing to install on clients RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello -

    I'm in the process of migrating clients from our old WSUS box which currently resides on a server '03 box to our 2012 R2 WSUS box.I currently have about 500 machines checking in with no issues but all updates are failing to install including my test machine. I've run various commands such wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow & renamed the softwaredistribution folder to no avail. I've reviewed the log files from both the server and the test client but I'm not seeing anything or do not have sufficient knowledge to dissect and pinpoint the root cause. Below I've added a snippet of the log file from my test machine and also a few more specs on the server.  Any information that can help pinpoint the problem is greatly appreciated.

    Server '12 R2

    64 Bit OS

    4GB Memory

    vSphere 6.0

  • Hi Omar,

    Let's check your WSUS overview:

    1. In the download status, there are updates needing files, and WSUS server not download them, so please check your WSUS event log in event viewer, there might be error 364, if yes, check event 364, it may indicate the reason why WSUS server failed to download updates;

    2. In Computers Status and Update Status, there are may errors both with computers and updates; For computers, please check if they report to the WSUS server recently, and check the report for detailed information, why these computers have errors;

    3. Also reset WSUS: cd /d C:\Program Files\Update Services\tools>wsustil reset;

    Check the result after doing the above.

    Best Regards,

    Anne

  • Hi Omar,

    1. Have you installed KB3095113 and KB3159706 on your WSUS server, if yes, have you do manual steps after installing KB3159706;

    2. Please show us an overview of your WSUS server, like this:

    3. What is the error when client failed to install updates from WSUS server(Sorry, but your above log is a little mixed, please check for update on client, then post the recently windows update log).

    Best Regards,

    Anne

  • Hi Anne -

    Thank you kindly for the response.  Yes, I do show that KB3059113, KB3159706 both being installed and I recall running a command line after installing KB3159706 because the application kept crashing.  Below are the contents from the WindowsUpdate log from my test PC.  It appears that communication has stopped as of 09/23/16 between the client & server and running various commands (wuauclt /detectnow, /reportnow, etc...) is not resolving the issue.

  • Hello -

    I'm in the process of migrating clients from our old WSUS box which currently resides on a server '03 box to our 2012 R2 WSUS box.  I currently have about 500 machines checking in with no issues but all updates are failing to install including my test machine. On my test PC, I am receiving a 0x80244019 error and tried the following to resolve to no avail:

    Method 1:

    I suggest you to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and check if it resolves the issue. Follow the below steps.

    1. Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard and select Control Panel

    2. Type Troubleshooting in the search bar on the Control Panel.

    3. Click on System and security under Troubleshoot computer problems.

    4. Click on Windows Update under Windows.

    5. Click on Advanced on the Windows update dialog box and click on Run as administrator (Enter the credentials if required).

    6. Click on Next and follow onscreen instruction complete the Windows Update troubleshooter.

    If the issue still persist, follow the below method.

    Method 2:

    I would suggest you to manually reset the Windows Updates Components, restart the computer and check if that helps.

    a) Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.

    b) Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop cryptSvc

    net stop bits

    net stop msiserver

    c) Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

    d) Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.

    net start wuauserv

    net start cryptSvc

    net start bits

    net start msiserver

    e) Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it.

    Below are the specs for the server:

    Server Specs:

    Server '12 R2

    64 Bit OS

    4GB Memory

    vSphere 6.0

    Lastly, small sample of log files from test PC:

  • Hi Omar,

    Let's check your WSUS overview:

    1. In the download status, there are updates needing files, and WSUS server not download them, so please check your WSUS event log in event viewer, there might be error 364, if yes, check event 364, it may indicate the reason why WSUS server failed to download updates;

    2. In Computers Status and Update Status, there are may errors both with computers and updates; For computers, please check if they report to the WSUS server recently, and check the report for detailed information, why these computers have errors;

    3. Also reset WSUS: cd /d C:\Program Files\Update Services\tools>wsustil reset;

    Check the result after doing the above.

    Best Regards,

    Anne
