Protecting clients over the Internet RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can DPM protect clients over the internet?
I know it can protect workgroup clients.
Is it only a matter of allowing access to the RPC ports?

  • I think DirectAcess could be good way because it effectively puts the Internet connected client on the LAN.  Of course you would need a DirectAccess server running Server 2008 R2 and the Internet client(s) would have to be Windows or Server 2008 R2.

  • Any way to do this without VPN/DirectAccess?

  • If you have enough bandwidth and allow the correct ports, then yes it is possible.  However, you need to consider the fact that your DPM server will need to be reachable through the internet so if you have something like DPM.companyname.local the internet based client need to be able to contact that DNS name.  Hosts file can become handy here.

So yes it is possible, but it won't be that easy on the infrastructure side

    Hope it helps,

  • Any insight on what ports need to be accessible from the internet to the DPM server?
