Manage passwords for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 ?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • How does a person find the mange passwords feature for Internet Explorer 11 on a Windows 7 box?  I saw a few webpages on this topic for IE 10, and also for IE11 on Windows 8, but nothing for IE11 on Windows 7.  When I go to IE 11 / Internet Options / Content / Auto Complete / Settings, there is no option to manage passwords.  I went to Credentials Manager and it says there are no windows credentials, and it doesn't show any web or Internet Explorer credentials.  Thanks

  • I went through so many pages of reading until I found this answer for Windows 7 Internet Explorer 11 - how to change a remembered password.  I got this directly from answers.microsoft.com.

To change the saved login id and password for a website on Internet Explorer, please try these steps:
1.Type the first letter of your user name, auto-complete will bring up a box of choices.
2.Highlight the username you want to delete. Hit the "delete" key.
3.Another auto complete window will pop up saying, "Windows has a stored password for this user name. Do you want to delete the username and password?"
    4.Click, "yes".
    5.Close Internet Explorer and reopen.
6.Type your user name and password in the website.
7.When you proceed with signing in you will get a popup "Do you want to save this password?"
    8.Click Yes, for that popup.

  • Thanks for the reply.

That link to the eightforums.com was not helpful.  It states:

This tutorial will show you how to view ... stored passwords by Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) in your account in Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

View and Remove Stored Passwords for Sites in Credential Manager

    1. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Credential Manager icon.

    2. Click/tap on Web Credentials, and expand a listed website (ex: www.eightforums.com) under "Web Passwords" that you want to view or remove ...

However it is apparent that the author of the article did not verify that this method is applicable to Windows 7.

When I click on the Credential Manager in Windows 7, there are no web credentials.  I looked on all 3 of my Windows 7 computers (one Windows 7 Professional and two Home Premium boxes) and none of them had a web credentials section.

    Any other ideas?

  • Hi,

Manage web credentials is a feature of Windows 8, not Internet Explorer.

  • That suggested tutorial on eightforums.com alleged that IE11 passwords were managed using the web credentials section of the Credential Manager on Windows 7 and 8.  However there are no web credentials in the Windows 7 Credential Manager.

Any other suggestions on how to manage IE11 passwords on a Windows 7 computer?  Did Microsoft just omit this feature?  Is there a third party solution?

    Thanks

  • I seem to have Nirsoft's IE Passview installed - as part of WSCC (which installs, updates and manages Sysinternals and Nirsoft utilities). Although IE Passview states that it supports up to IE10, after saving a password in IE11, it had no trouble in retrieving the entry. Entries cannot be edited but selected entries can be deleted, copied to clipboard or saved to a text file.

    For IE Passview see http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/internet_explorer_password.html

    For WSCC see http://www.kls-soft.com/wscc/index.php

Also for your convenience and future use I would suggest investigating third party password managers.

  • Windows Credentials:

Nobody can view saved credential in Internet Explorer. This credentials are stored while accessing shares from network.

Web Credentials only saved password of internet explorer.

    In Windows 7,

We can view saved credentials of internet explorer by using third party tool.

Click this link to download http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/internet_explorer_password.html

Web Credential feature available from Windows 8.

  • Thanks for your help.

Had a little trouble.  After I downloaded IE Passview from the Nirsoft website, I unzipped it and ran the executable file.  Then my WebRoot antivirus blocked it as malware and erased the executable file.  I went into Webroot, found where the file was in quarantine and restored it and gave it permission to run.

IEPV.exe found one entry.  I had just recently added an amazon login just as a test and it was not listed.

  • Just tried my Amazon login and found that after signing out, closing and reopening IE11, the login was not remembered by IE11. IE Passview showed no entries.

I repeated the process and this time IE11 did remember the login. And now IE Passview shows two identical entries for Amazon.

(Also it may be that IE Passview really does only support up to IE10.)

Are there specific logins you are trying to retrieve or are you just trying to learn to use IE11 to manage passwords?

For future use, have you tried looking for third party password managers ? These have the possibility of using the same login no matter which browser (or computer) you use.

  • Thank you Magic Guru. Method worked perfectly to change one incorrect password without deleting the entire list. Thank you.

  • This method used to work, and I had been able to change my Office 365 remembered login password at least twice.

However the method has now STOPPED working - when you type in the first letter of the user name auto-complete no longer brings up a box of choices....I guess Microsoft have closed this down?

    Any new ideas...?

    1. add IE add-on - iMacros
    2. start recording
    3. see your password when the field is selected

This works perfectly, there is no need for a third party utility unless you don't know what you have saved. I had a user who had multiple username/passwords saved on different sites and on one in particular had accidently saved a customers username/password. Used this trick and deleted the customers without affecting my user at all.

  • You must be smoking crack.  When I highlight a stored username, Windows puts that username in the username field and closes the drop-down box.  There is no option to delete it, with the Delete key or any right-click option.  Microsoft does Google's best marketing.
