Windows Explorer Crashing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Don't know if anyone else has had this problem. If I copy or move several files at once Windows Explorer crashes and restarts. I've turned off my anti-virus and still get the same crash. I've tried drag-and-drop and the Move-To/Copy-To functions with the same effect. I've tried with the status bar on and off to see if there was a problem with the rendering.

One thing, is there a way to turn off the small icons while in Detailed View. It seems a terrible waste of CPU time to render a small image of a picture when all I need is the file name.

  • I only have this problem with avi files after I installed WMP11.

    Uninstalling it solves the problem.

    Help this helps!

  • Thanks for your post, sorry it took so long to post a response!

It seems that this is a problem that has been attended to in post Beta 2 builds.

  • Sorry it took so long to get back. My hardware is a Dell XPS laptop, 1gb memory and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 video card built in. Performance rating is 3.

I uninstalled Windows Media Player 11 and the error has gone away. One question or suggestion would be enabling people to turn off the small icon is Detail View and just show the name etc. This would cut down on the processor overhead needed to render the icon.

  • I am (was) running WMP 11.0.5358.4827, and Help / Check for updates ... tells me that I am running the latest version.  I also have Windows Explorer crashing whenever I try to open a folder containing an AVI file in a Thumbnails or Filmstrip view.

So .. if the problem was solved, it's been re-introduced (unless something else I've installed recently is causing the same symptoms)

  • I have the same problem.  I have a Gigabyte motherboard with AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor and 2GB of DDR400.  Windows Explorer crashes every time I select several files at once.  I tried re-installing Windows and then systematically re-installing all the software I need, one item at a time.  I have an 80GB hard drive, partitioned so that all my documents and stuff I really need are on the D: drive.  No matter what I do, Explorer will revert to crashing every time I select several files.  I even made a Ghost image of my operating system while it is working properly, but after Explorer starts crashing, even restoring Windows with the image will not stop it from crashing.
Maybe it's a problem with the partition, do you have a partitioned hard drive?

  • I'm getting the exact problem described above... I'm trying to move some .AVI files from a DVD-R to my computer and explorer crashes...

How do I uninstall WMP11? It's not listed in Add/Remove programs... I'm running Vista Business 32-bit on a Dell 1521 notebook, 2GB Ram, 180GB HD, AMD Turion processor.

    Thanks for your help!
